<span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">I know quite a few nurses- some family, some friends, and some just the sweet people who were there for me when I had my kids. These people deal with a lot of things most of us couldn't even imagine facing at work. So if someone graduates nursing school with the heart to help others in that way, I say they well deserve a cake to recognize their efforts! Heck, cupcakes too. They've earned it.</span></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">For this nursing school graduate, I made a scrubs shirt cake decked out with a stethoscope, name tag (with he graduates name on it), scissors, and pen. The cake was vanilla with buttercream icing. There were both chocolate and vanilla cupcakes as well. Each cupcake had a little handmade chocolate topper on it - either a band-aid or a stethoscope with heart. A great way to say congratulations and a pre-thank you for the hard work ahead.</span></div>

<span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">It's always fun when I'm presented with a new concept. This person was ordering a bridal shower cake for her sister. The theme of the wedding (and the shower) was green apples. I had never heard of this before, but was very interested in the idea. The colors were navy blue and <i>obviously</i> apple green. Never thought I would be asked to make a giant apple cake, but you just never know what to expect!</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">The leaf and stem were made out of melting chocolate, so completely edible. And of course, there were cupcakes to go along with the cake that I forgot <i>again </i>to photograph.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>Reneehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08091060782483432433noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-560588801414732051.post-20969256785344538292012-06-03T21:05:00.001-04:002012-06-03T21:05:08.760-04:00Minnie Mouse 1st Birthday<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">My niece turned 1 year old today, and her mom threw her the most awesome birthday party to celebrate! Everything was pink, black, and white. There was tons of pink candy on all the tables and the kids were even given Mickey and Minnie ears to wear. A party this cute and coordinated calls for a cake to match.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjLRBXERp9Bq_IcIK4vAxgn-RGIiXshLZIG6cdUAoLr5u5lwlURBZSgNQ-GARZd2Lx0-Wy7A2LuT7D0CczagMUpA0ZbxpG_FRsHEHEtUOAqWszMqMbqoxc-uaGv3ByhLc-h1S1Wqk2BKfo/s1600/DSCN0946.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjLRBXERp9Bq_IcIK4vAxgn-RGIiXshLZIG6cdUAoLr5u5lwlURBZSgNQ-GARZd2Lx0-Wy7A2LuT7D0CczagMUpA0ZbxpG_FRsHEHEtUOAqWszMqMbqoxc-uaGv3ByhLc-h1S1Wqk2BKfo/s320/DSCN0946.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">The cake was vanilla with cream cheese icing. I ran into a bit of a pickle with the mouse head. See, I don't work with fondant, and I have learned from experience that black buttercream icing may only be used in minimal amounts for piping. Never cover a cake with it - it tastes bitter and leaves people with stained mouths which is <i>not</i> flattering. So, solution - I iced this in white, then covered the entire thing with black sprinkles. I loved the extra sparkle it provided. Though I will admit, I think there was still a stain risk. So I warned those in charge and we opted to serve the bottom tier first, and the top only if necessary. Black is still my nemesis.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">Oh, and because each 1st birthday requires a special birthday boy/girl piece of cake, I made a mouse on the side, just for her. Ears on both cakes were made of sugar cookies! There were also chocolate cupcakes to boot, but you'll just have to imagine them in your mind.</span></div>

<span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">This was my first-ever cupcake cake. They've received a bad rap by <a href="http://cakewrecks.com/">some</a>, but understandably they can be done rather poorly. This one was easier because it didn't require any particular shape. And honestly, cupcakes are so much more convenient with little kids. Teach the lesson of patience another time and give the kids their cake - pronto.</span></div>

<span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">Remember that 3-tiered bridal shower cake I did a couple posts back? Check it out <a href="http://naturalcakes.blogspot.com/2012/04/bridal-shower-elegance.html">here</a>. Well that sweet bride was married a couple weeks ago and as a surprise to her husband requested a groom's cake be made. She wanted the Chevy Camaro symbol. I love requests like this - the type that, when made, force me to Google the request because <i>I have no idea what it is.</i> I am not, nor will I ever be, a car person. But I think I still pulled this one off pretty well.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhGLTN9CydViJZnkHI_PC-LNoPh_d4LY-Mf2sHr4Nw8aY6Yd5S4MSghRlJpkNnk2q2Uf-ypcfOOQKz7Qwrw95IpM7or1X3bBKMS48vsDg2hpLJOI_Ued_eHGdDJp1-0E-5EMQZRuiO2vog/s1600/DSC08361.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhGLTN9CydViJZnkHI_PC-LNoPh_d4LY-Mf2sHr4Nw8aY6Yd5S4MSghRlJpkNnk2q2Uf-ypcfOOQKz7Qwrw95IpM7or1X3bBKMS48vsDg2hpLJOI_Ued_eHGdDJp1-0E-5EMQZRuiO2vog/s320/DSC08361.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">What I especially loved about this cake was the classic chocolatey-ness of it all. Four layers of chocolate cake, with a chocolate buttercream and chocolate cookie crumb filling between each layer. Whoa.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

<span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">My friend's daughter turned 3 and for it requested a dance party. Technically, she requested a Lady Gaga party, but my friend decided probably better just to call it a dance party. I felt better about taking my two little boys to a dance party. :)</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">As a surprise, I snagged a photo of Noa rocking out an awesome dance move of some sort and made her into a cake topper. She is surrounded by sugar cookie stars as well to further accentuate her birthday stardom. She ate it up - pun intended.</span></div>

Here's the first! </span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><br />
</span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiQl8c-cgQJ3xcscV4kbVBk6HNPCfOQrqBEMsbNgyg9_JZVNA58gkCZ3f2P_yeB525CydnpibhRW4oggGRqrdC3DMwblvcCAlP5JvBUQOvXvxRUgNk0dAKnT3mIEtSVzOCFH6QXM59i62I/s1600/DSC08224.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiQl8c-cgQJ3xcscV4kbVBk6HNPCfOQrqBEMsbNgyg9_JZVNA58gkCZ3f2P_yeB525CydnpibhRW4oggGRqrdC3DMwblvcCAlP5JvBUQOvXvxRUgNk0dAKnT3mIEtSVzOCFH6QXM59i62I/s320/DSC08224.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><br />
</span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><br />
</span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">The color scheme matches the colors for the wedding. The cake flavors were your classic chocolate and vanilla with buttercream icing. The letters in the middle are the couple's monogram. Here is the funny conversation between my husband and me that ensued with those letters:</span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><br />
</span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">Me: (after making the middle letter) <i>Honey, what letter is that?</i></span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">Him: <i>G</i></span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">Me: Crap...</span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">(10 minutes later...)</span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">Me: <i>Honey, what letter is that?</i></span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">Him: <i>C</i></span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">Me: (sigh of relief) <i>Thank you</i></span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">Him: <i>What letter should I be telling you?</i></span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><i><br />
</i></span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">Always good to have someone around who knows nothing about the project. Otherwise, I would have been marrying this girl to some guy with a different last name initial than her fiance! Within one year, we have welcomed 5 baby boys and only 2 baby girls into the world. Well, here comes baby boy six!</span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><br />

</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">I am so very excited for these two people to become parents! I wanted to make sure their baby shower cake was extra special, so I did a little investigative work to find out what would most be enjoyed by the mommy-to-be. The top tier was made with her in mind - chocolate cake with peanut butter icing filling. Since I know not everyone is a chocolate/peanut butter fan, I made something completely different for the bottom tier - vanilla cake with buttercream and raspberry filling.</span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><br />

Woohoo! I was pretty excited to get back into the swing of things. This Thomas-themed cake was for a little boy's 2nd birthday. His mom occasionally posts pictures and videos of this little boy on Facebook and let me tell you he is one cute kid. Crazy cute. So I was pretty stoked to make something for him because I imagine he is the type of kid who will genuinely love it.</span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><br />

Yea about that...forgive me for a minute as I jump back again. You see, just a couple weeks before we rang in the new year, we had another celebration - My baby turned 1 year old! I take birthdays rather seriously, so when I realized I left the picture out in my year-end review, I couldn't just let it go. Without further adieu, Levi's Winter ONEderland.</span><div><span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><br />

</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">That's a chocolate snowman with accompanying vanilla cupcakes. Buttercream "snow" top them off. Ugh - apologies for the blurry photo. Said one year old loves to play with the camera and leave smudges on the lense. But that's ok, his cuteness makes up for it:</span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><br />

</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">The boy had no remorse for tearing the snowman's head to pieces. It became all too easy to post the pictures on Facebook and neglect the site. But not everyone is on Facebook, so I am going to be as intentional as I can at getting back here with the pictures from this point forward.</span><div><span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><br />
</span></div><div><span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">So, let's do a quick review of what was skipped in 2011:</span></div><div><span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><br />
</span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhXT17wUf80QMmXg-IsZMg4xgWE-ZhkB1dpNSTypPEUKg1n_UtwCi9mlYjUUecCqSx4_b83sspZS4XtnBmUXO9tSQ2wJu__6S04YtMfLhEoIrIkmriw4TeSoUJ_jPqFoIJAbg913GxIA1A/s1600/100_4815.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhXT17wUf80QMmXg-IsZMg4xgWE-ZhkB1dpNSTypPEUKg1n_UtwCi9mlYjUUecCqSx4_b83sspZS4XtnBmUXO9tSQ2wJu__6S04YtMfLhEoIrIkmriw4TeSoUJ_jPqFoIJAbg913GxIA1A/s320/100_4815.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">A remodel of the peanut butter chocolate cake I had made a couple years back. Vanilla cake this time, peanut butter icing, Flyer's dark chocolate peanut butter ganache. If you're familiar with TastyKakes, that hail from Philly, just think KandyKake.</span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><br />
</span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjBVcyMsvzJQTGZSRbpyYT03Dh3tehiburvQuqDmNnx4NTObxcdx22JZyc2vDR-gUsfqn0fQPkoXeKGIPKBmMRkAtIlVabVF9yVVDtXl06wkmJvwfBltK630p-pVclaS2tM5-q3t_2isf0/s1600/100_4843.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="178" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjBVcyMsvzJQTGZSRbpyYT03Dh3tehiburvQuqDmNnx4NTObxcdx22JZyc2vDR-gUsfqn0fQPkoXeKGIPKBmMRkAtIlVabVF9yVVDtXl06wkmJvwfBltK630p-pVclaS2tM5-q3t_2isf0/s320/100_4843.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">Largest cake <i>ever</i>. It's a shame this is just being thrown into the mix and not being given it's own post. Because this cake was massive. It's an exact replica (to the best of my ability) of a C-17, which a friend of mine flies in the US Air Force. Topping out at 3ft long, the wing span was equal in width. It consisted of 3 flavors of cake - chocolate, vanilla, and coconut marble, all covered in buttercream icing. The wings were made of sugar cookie and the engines of ice cream cones. It barely survived the heat of the 105 degree July day.</span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><br />
</span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj98OgFa7nxV5J-BxUPTFaxjexo5R8liD_a4T8S2c6I3lteL8FFb50B2agZwuz5AwVkwNOc2D8ftoYT_Cl_sCB_LyIAQNdGI_An54RQMX4C9X7vNVtQKX2qA3itRwK2M54ToJlImfNH7q0/s1600/205823_10150341669450734_537355733_10130896_8365818_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj98OgFa7nxV5J-BxUPTFaxjexo5R8liD_a4T8S2c6I3lteL8FFb50B2agZwuz5AwVkwNOc2D8ftoYT_Cl_sCB_LyIAQNdGI_An54RQMX4C9X7vNVtQKX2qA3itRwK2M54ToJlImfNH7q0/s320/205823_10150341669450734_537355733_10130896_8365818_n.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">Rose cupcakes for my cousin's 15th birthday. My sister received the sports-loving gene in my family (as I did not). We missed him, and I hoped to do this cake well for him, too.</span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><br />

</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">Ok, admittedly I am way behind on my posts. Yes, my son did turn 2, but that was back in July - eek! Regardless, no less important and certainly not to be skipped over. For his first birthday we had this rather large party that I know would cause some to shake their heads as he certainly had no idea what was going on. It was a blast, but I did swear that it was a one-time event. The 1st is special, the 2nd...not so much. I declared I would have dinner with his grandparents for his 2nd and that's it. Sure Renee...<i>sure.</i> Ok, the deal is, I love my family, and I can't resist having any sort of gathering with them. So, what was one large party on his 1st, burst into <i>three </i>smaller parties for his 2nd! One with his friends (he's <i>two</i> - friends? yes, friends - I swear he has them), one with my side of the family, and one with my hubbies' side. Sheesh. This boy is lucky he's so cute. Due to the party count, I went simple with the cakes. In fact, I didn't even take pictures of the cupcakes for his first party, as the buttercream icing was simply white with no adornments. He loved them all though, and that is what matters the most!</span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><br />

And when I do, I will be on the news because my grandkids are going to throw me a big party that will be news-worthy. This cake makes that dream seem attainable. You see, Shirley is my grandmother. She is 85 and still rockin it. She drives, goes out with friends, helps raise my 15 year old cousin, and even watches my own babies in the church nursery. I have good genes, no doubt. Hopefully I pass on some of these cake decorating abilities and one day my granddaughter will make me a cake on my 85th, too!</span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><br />

I made these dainty daisy cookies for my niece's Daisy Troop. Each daisy cookie sat upon a stick which was planted in a cookie pot. The dirt is a brown sugar fake out. I had a blast making these, but boy were they a lot of work! Most likely I will be sticking to cake from now on. The idea for these was inspired by <a href="http://www.sweetsugarbelle.com/">SweetSugarBelle</a>, who is a cookie queen.</span></div><br />

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">A great friend of mine hosted an Elmo party for her daughter's 2nd birthday. Because no child likes to be told they must wait their turn for a piece of cake to be cut for them, my friend thought it best to make character cupcakes instead. Quick delivery makes for happier children. And, because getting our kids to eat vegetables tends to be an uphill battle, she also requested carrot cake cupcakes which I diligently packed with carrots (my boy was eating them, too!) I have a panel of people I turn to for various critiques (flavor, colors, tools, design, etc). For this project, I turned only to my soon-to-be-2 year old son. When he saw the finished product he yelled "Cake! Elmo!" Ah - "S" is for success.</span><br />

Of course I insisted on carving the shape by hand (who needs a pan?) but somehow among the carving and icing this sea creature seemed to morph. I turned to my most trusted critics and all guessed it to be a dolphin (with the exception of my dad, who guessed t-rex...), so I decided maybe I was being a little too critical. This is why it is best to make such creations for people you have known for over 20 years (a greater number in light of us only being 26). Besides, I'm pretty sure the 3 layers of chocolate cake and 2 layers of vanilla buttercream and fresh strawberries ended all questions regarding the specimen of what was being consumed.</span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />

I used Mother's Day as an excuse to test out some future cake projects. This was my first time making carrot cake with the infamous cream cheese icing. It's tough to know what to expect when you have never even eaten carrot cake yourself. But, it seemed to go over very well with the family! I am going to tweek the recipe a bit, but am set for next week's carrot cake cupcakes! This was also my first time decorating with rosettes. My roommate from college brought this simple, yet elegant, design to my attention and I promptly promised her such a cake when she comes to visit me in the Fall. I didn't have the called-for tip (that problem was later remedied), but they turned out pretty cute still.</span></div>Reneehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08091060782483432433noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-560588801414732051.post-77249367493450253632011-04-17T09:48:00.000-04:002011-04-17T09:48:28.270-04:00Little Girl Baby Shower<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiIGVKRKQRXoFBGRoUCC7BX7I-zqt3K28fuMRBefaKbqf2pQc1qKFXOLQDos8rTUCCiGKBrFLZEcX47D5xWb26Dilux6Sr210epKCbc07oK7cAqkRHoXmoPFJh6q5hAdiENvFveHYZRIcU/s1600/DSC05688.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiIGVKRKQRXoFBGRoUCC7BX7I-zqt3K28fuMRBefaKbqf2pQc1qKFXOLQDos8rTUCCiGKBrFLZEcX47D5xWb26Dilux6Sr210epKCbc07oK7cAqkRHoXmoPFJh6q5hAdiENvFveHYZRIcU/s320/DSC05688.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br />

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">"Who lives in a pineapple under the sea? SpongeBob Square Pants!" I will openly admit that I have watched very little SpongeBob (with the sad exception of seeing the movie in a TN drive-in theater). These first two lines of the song are the only two that I know, and so I found myself singing them over and over for days. The cute cake was worth the musical torture that filled my head and kitchen.</span><br />

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">Like many 4 year old boys, my nephew also loves everything Toy Story! I can't blame him - this has been my favorite Disney movie since the first one came out in '95. I've been in a round cake, tiered rut recently, so I wanted to mix it up. This is the infamous spaceship box that we first see Buzz Lightyear land in. Because I believe all parts of your cake should be edible, I made the wings out of graham cracker. Similar to the <a href="http://naturalcakes.blogspot.com/2010/07/glee-karaoke-machine.html">karaoke machine cake</a>, this was two 3-layered cakes stacked on top of each other with a divider in between.</span> <br />

Sadly, it's just taken me that long to get the picture posted. This cake was symbolic in a couple ways: 1. It's gold (I know - hard to tell from this shot - but trust me - gold and sparkly). It's pretty common for gold to be tied in with 50 years. 2.The cake is 5 tiers high - one for each decade Susanne has lived so far! The cupcakes were made with her favorite - chocolate cake, chocolate buttercream, and Girl Scout Thin Mints on top!</span>Reneehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08091060782483432433noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-560588801414732051.post-62977709570404469582011-03-06T15:46:00.000-05:002011-03-06T15:46:59.387-05:00Wonderfully Simplistic<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">Sometimes people just want cake. No frills, no fuss, just <i>cake.</i> This was the week of simple cakes. Simple outside - yes - but delectable goodness hiding inside. </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">This first cake was made for my Grandmom's birthday dinner. A 6in cake was enough for a group of people who I knew would opt for smaller pieces. This was a yellow cake with cream cheese icing with - the kicker - strawberry filling. The tart filling perfectly balances the sweet cake and icing.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;"> </span><br />

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">Most cake requests I receive have a theme. The person wants something created that they can't otherwise buy at the store. So I was a little surprised when I was asked to make a single cake for a small family party. Then I found out what kind of cake was wanted. This is a chocolate cake, with chocolate buttercream icing, with crushed Girl Scout Thin Mints throughout. 3 layers of cake, 2 layers of icing, 2 layers of crushed cookie, and additional cookie crunch on top. Definitely NOT something you can buy at the store!</span> <br />

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">Gavin's mom and dad threw him a barnyard bash for his 1st birthday. I loved the party theme and was excited for a new challenge! Each tier was a different flavor cake - marble, yellow, and chocolate. The fences, tree, and sun were all made from melting chocolate (both edible and delicious!). The roof of the barn was made from two chocolate covered graham crackers. I later added grass around the bottom of the barn. 100% edible. 100% adorable!</span> <br />
